School for Politics and Critique 2019 – "Municipal Organizing and Left-wing Environmental Solutions"

The idea for the school is driven by the emergence of a number of local initiatives in the country that commits to tackle specific and practical problems related to:

• air pollution and environmental pollution
• increased number of illegal landfills that decrease the quality of life
• opening of mines in the Southeast region whose operation would be catastrophic for the environment and the inhabitants in that area
• local governments failure of the institutional way of problem-solving, with a long bureaucratic and labyrinth-like processes.

These are just some of the reasons that initiate organization of this type of school. Resolving problems of a local nature through the institutional mechanisms that face constant obstructions are opening other opportunities. That is self-organized culture with horizontal structure that overcomes the formal paths of the institutional labyrinths. It also takes over the initiative, solving the problems that the citizens in their surrounding are facing.

Hence, problems covered by this School will be pointing on two levels solutions: 1) self-organization among citizens at local / municipal level; and 2) practices of cooperation between the municipalities and citizens that will result with sustainable practices of bottom-up municipalism and social ecology. It is important to emphasize that the mission of the School is to introduce to the spontaneous movements some political and theoretical framework and deepened knowledge that could improve their mission and strategy of action. Theoretical approaches close to the philosophy of acting of these movements and initiatives coming from Southeast Europe could also be heard at the School. Socialist and libertarian thought is the leading theoretical motif that in relation with urbanist and municipalist components are creating synthesis of knowledge and will offer new political concepts that will be relevant and inspiring in their further activities.

Building regional platform for inter-initiative cooperation and networking of leftist activists from the state and the region is one of the primary goals of this school. Opportunities could be establish through the seminars for theoretical, activist and experiential exchanges. In this way, improvement of inter-initiatives cooperation will become more formal. The experiences were told by individuals who have participated in the initiatives. Lastly, the school is an opportunity for creating new political strategies.

School for Politics and Critique is organized by the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities – Skopje with financial support by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung foundation for Southeast Europe.
